NSBE @ Ryerson

About NSBE

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) with more than 13,000 members, is the largest student-managed organization in North America. It was created to increase the number if Black Engineers by initiating programs and doing outreach to encourage and support the Black students who were considering studying engineering or who were already studying an engineering-related discipline. This mission has evolved somewhat to be more inclusive and provide even more support. You may view the current mission here.

NSBE is comprised of more than 300 student chapters on college and university campuses, more than 50 Alumni Extension chapters nationwide, more than 76 NSBE Jr. pre-college chapters, and 12 International chapters (6 in Canada). These chapters are geographically divided into six regions.

NSBE had its genesis at a national conference planned and hosted by the Society of Black Engineers at Purdue University in April 1975. Black Engineering students from the United States and Canada attended the event. From this meeting of concerned students and educators, NSBE was born. In 1976, NSBE was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the State of Texas. NSBE also became recognized as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

NSBE @ Ryerson

The NSBE Ryerson chapter works to carry out the mission and objectives and of the organization at Ryerson and in the Greater Toronto area and Canada as a whole. We try to have group study sessions, high school/junior high outreach programs, technical seminars and workshops, general meetings and participate in conferences.

The chapter isn't limited to just students in engineering and technical fields. Our membership includes students in all academic fields including Engineering (all disciplines), Social Work, and Business Management and Computer Science.

We also have a set of long range objectives that we follow to ensure that our chapter is as effective as it can be.
